Can coaching help me?

This entry is part 1 of 3 in the series Can coaching help me?

I almost daily meet people who ask me the above question. Can coaching help me? Could a coaching be the right thing to do in my situation? When do I need coaching? When can coaching help?

Fortunately, Dr. Ernst Bechinie (http://www.solutioncoaching.ch), a fellow solution focused coach who works in Lausanne, Switzerland, just put together real case studies of his coaching clients that show typical situations where coaching can help to improve. The essence thereby is to support clients finding a new direction with confidence. And assist them to do the right step at the right time.

Situations of „Personal Life Changes“

What is the purpose of my life now?

“… I feel confronted with the question shall I go on to work in this manner. I like to work, but I do not want to be consumed. My daughter was diagnosed with cancer. In addition to that I also had an operation. My prevailing question now is: what shall I do with my life, what is the purpose of my life”?

I am not O.K.

“… very often I know what I should do. But then comes this inner watchwoman, the inner controller. She tells me it is not good enough, you can do better, it’s not O.K. and than I am completely confused”.

I want to live a more organized life

“… I am in my way myself, am hindering myself. I want to live a more organized life. My mind is controlling me. Yes, it is hard with me and I cannot take care of myself properly”.

Finding a direction

“… now I have just gone into early retirement. I have to do something in terms of work and I want to find a new direction. But there is this anxiety, fear of starting something and failing. There is this resistance of getting into action and leaving my comfort zone”.

Looking at the market in an unsure situation

“… after the reorganization I might loose my job, also the new strategy does not give me chances for the future. I think this is an opportunity while I am still here, to find out what I really would like to do”.

Employee in a healthcare institution being released

“…I have just been released after 12 years. I had no time and capacity to plan for the future. I need to give myself a rest before going into the next position. I am in despair, very tired, near to a burn out. And I am in danger to push myself into things without being ready, mentally, physically and emotionally. I need reflection time”.

Situations of Executives on a Cross-Road

CEO in a healthcare institution being released

“…I have just been released after 12 years. I had no time and capacity to plan for the future. I need to give myself a rest before going into the next position. I am in despair, very tired, near to a burn out. And I am in danger to push myself into things without being ready, mentally, physically and emotionally. I need reflection time”.

Owner of a training company going into arts business

“… sometimes I ask myself: am I stupid to give up a good business. However over the last 3 years my heart is not fully in it anymore.  Since I put all my knowledge and energy into this new thing, I have the feeling of belonging – that I have not had in this clear form before. I think I have to be careful that I am not carried away”.

Medical doctor in despair at his University clinic

“… I discovered a new way of pain treatment without operation. I talked to the professor – for him it was purely nonscientific nonsense. I know I can not go on with the old methods, play golf with colleagues and have diner with them payed by medical companies. This life I dont want”.

Entrepreneur selling his consulting company

“… Selling my company I agreed to stay for another two years as CEO. I was full of enthusiasm with the market potential of the new owners. Soon I discovered: the division heads there do not bring us any leads, administrative acts take ages, overheads explode and some of the senior consultants are about to leave. We are just not prepared for this corporate life”.

HR director in difficulty with a major project

“… This was my major project in the past two years. We had done everything right: involved the divisions, invested in communications you name it. And it did not work. Complaints over complaints despite higher earning potentials for most of the managers. I feel loosing support from my boss and my team”.

Executive with rising pressure after strategy change

“… We have just had a change in our client relations strategy. The pressure is rising, I don’t see how I could achieve these new targets. Also my job might be in danger. Physically I am there but my heart is somewhere else.

The former spirit is gone and I am not the only one”.
