The 10 secrets of successful leadership: Secret Number 5

This entry is part 5 of 10 in the series The 10 secrets of successful leadership

Secret Number 5: They focus on usefulness!

Successful leaders create an atmosphere of progress by making sure that they and their teams work on useful things in the most useful manner. Their employees are motivated and have fun, because they can see that their work makes sense and due to the progress they can achieve and the high productivity they get a higher reputation and better feedbacks.

But how can you as a leader create this atmosphere? Start small – e.g. with your next meeting and guarantee that this will be the most useful meeting ever by asking the following questions:

  1. “How useful is our meeting at the moment for each of us on a scale from 1 to 10, if 10 signifies “This is the most productive meeting I have ever experienced” and 1 means “It has been a complete waste of time”?
  2. What about this meeting till now has been so useful that we are at x, y or z instead of still being at 1? And what else has been useful, for each of us? (This is how you find out what you can do more of in the future)
  3. In the further course of this meeting, how would we notice that the usefulness had gone up the scale by +1?” (These and more questions you find in the following book: Peter Szabo – S.U.R.F. – a refreshing model for sustainable change

Use the answers of your employees to make this and future meetings more productive and let your employees take part in your ”usefulness”-process.

All the best for you and your team!
