The 10 secrets of successful leadership: Secret Number 3

This entry is part 3 of 10 in the series The 10 secrets of successful leadership

Secret Number 3: They value their employees!

As I mentioned before, successful leaders aim to have the best employees that help them to reach the goals. But it is by far not enough to just gather good employees and think that they will do the job. Successful leaders know that they  have to value their employees, so that a strong commitment can emerge. But what’s the best way to value your employees and enhance commitment? Here are two ideas:

Idea 1: Look for resources and things that are already working well
«Always address a person in her resources first.» Insoo Kim Berg

  • Before your next meeting with your employee, make a list of all her resources and all the things that she did great in the past.
  • Read this list right before the meeting and bear the resources in mind during the meeting.
  • Idea 2: The triple
Ben Furman, a coach from Finland, has developed this simple and most effective tool. Use it in this order in the next meeting when your employee tells you a success story:

  • “Wow, I am impressed by the way you…
  • “I imagine, this surely wasn’t easy!”
  • “How did you do that?”
  • I am sure that these two exercises will make a huge difference and I am looking forward to your comments after you tried them.

    Value your employees!

    • Another idea to value employees and get their committment is to involve them in some of the decision making by asking their opinion and actively listening to their comments, truly caring what they think, so that they know thier opinion is valued.

    • Thank you Jenny for your great comment, please tell us more about your experiences with listening and truly caring. What differences did this make to you and your employees?
